US Approves Major New Arms Sales: Pentagon Finalizes $15.67 Billion Package for Israel and Saudi Military Forces

Date:

Pentagon officials have completed authorization procedures for $15.67 billion in military equipment transfers to Israel and Saudi Arabia, representing a major expansion of American defense commitments in the Middle East. The State Department disclosed Friday that Israel’s $6.67 billion package and Saudi Arabia’s $9 billion allocation will significantly enhance allied capabilities during a turbulent period marked by ongoing ceasefire implementation in Gaza and mounting regional tensions over potential American military operations targeting Iran.
Israel’s multi-dimensional acquisition program addresses critical operational requirements through four distinct procurement categories. The centerpiece involves 30 Apache attack helicopters valued at $3.8 billion, equipped with advanced rocket launchers and state-of-the-art targeting systems designed to enhance precision strike effectiveness and improve surveillance capabilities. These sophisticated aircraft will provide Israeli forces with superior operational capacity for missions spanning border defense, vital infrastructure protection, and population center security across diverse environmental conditions.
Ground force modernization constitutes the second major pillar through 3,250 light tactical vehicles acquired for $1.98 billion to transform deployment speed and logistical efficiency. Israeli Defense Forces will deploy these platforms to facilitate rapid personnel movement, extend operational communication lines, and strengthen supply chain operations across challenging geographic terrain. The package includes supplementary investments: $740 million for armored personnel carrier power pack modernization to upgrade vehicles operational since 2008, and $150 million for light utility helicopters designed to expand aerial support capacity and complement existing rotorcraft.
Saudi Arabia’s defensive posture receives substantial reinforcement through 730 Patriot missiles and associated equipment worth $9 billion. The State Department emphasized that this capability enhancement serves American foreign policy objectives by strengthening a major non-NATO ally that contributes to regional stability and economic progress. The improved air defense architecture will protect Saudi forces, American military personnel stationed throughout the kingdom, and coalition partners while significantly improving the integrated missile defense network safeguarding Gulf nations against airborne threats.
Legislative oversight concerns have intensified, with Democratic congressional leadership challenging the expedited approval process and limited consultation mechanisms. The House Foreign Affairs Committee’s ranking member has accused the Trump administration of blatantly ignoring long-standing congressional prerogatives while refusing to engage in substantive discussions about critical policy questions, including the next phases of Gaza reconstruction and the broader framework governing American-Israeli security relations in the evolving regional landscape.
