Google unveils AI-enhanced search and innovative smart glasses relaunch.

In a significant overhaul, Google has announced the integration of advanced artificial intelligence into its search bar, aiming to transform how users interact with the platform. This announcement came during the company’s annual Google I/O conference, where executives revealed that the search box will now support longer, more detailed queries, resembling natural human conversation rather than the traditional rigid syntax. This shift is facilitated by Google’s new AI model, Gemini 3.5, which promises to enhance the predictive capabilities of the search engine and encourage direct user interaction with Google’s chatbot.

Elizabeth Reid, the executive overseeing Google Search, highlighted the magnitude of these changes, describing them as the most substantial in the search engine’s nearly 30-year history. As part of the update, users can expect search results that are more visually engaging and interactive, with suggestions to utilize Google’s AI for tasks like creating calendar invites or spreadsheet plans. Despite these enhancements, users will retain the option to access the conventional list of links through a “Web” tab. Reid also noted that queries to Google Search reached unprecedented levels last month, with AI Mode interactions doubling each quarter since its introduction.

Google’s AI ambitions extend beyond search. Josh Woodward, responsible for the development of the Gemini AI, expressed the goal of creating a “universal assistant” that is personal, proactive, and persistent. Currently, 900 million people use the Gemini app monthly, a figure that, while impressive, is still outpaced by ChatGPT’s weekly users. New features for subscribers of AI Pro and Ultra plans include “information agents” capable of conducting in-depth research and generating summaries or plans of action. Additionally, a “generative user interface” will offer customized visuals, and the Gemini Spark feature will leverage user data from Gmail and Google Calendar for enhanced planning and research capabilities.

Alongside AI advancements, Google is revisiting the tech eyewear market in collaboration with Samsung and eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. The company introduced a new line of “intelligent eyewear” that will hit the market in the fall. These sunglasses and eyeglasses, equipped with embedded cameras, will respond to voice commands through Gemini. This move aligns with industry trends, as Meta has already partnered with EssilorLuxottica to offer similar technology since 2021. Despite the unsuccessful launch of Google Glass in 2014, which was met with ridicule and discontinued shortly after, the current market climate appears more receptive, with augmented-reality glasses viewed as a promising growth sector for tech companies.

Google’s renewed interest in smart glasses, including a second model with an in-lens display called Project Aura, reflects a broader shift in consumer attitudes towards wearable technology. As the company pushes the boundaries of AI and smart devices, it aims to make these technologies more accessible and integrated into everyday life for a wider audience beyond tech enthusiasts and business professionals.
