The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly bolstered the relationship between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This collaboration, initiated with the launch of Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite on May 7, 2013, has paved the way for future projects that will emphasize next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and the enhancement of Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Although VNREDSat-1 had a projected operational lifespan of five years, it continues to function effectively in 2026, showcasing its longevity and reliability over 14 years.
Beyond its operational success, VNREDSat-1 has been instrumental in advancing Vietnam’s expertise in satellite technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam. This training equipped them with essential skills in system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. As a result, these engineers have transitioned from relying solely on transferred procedures to independently addressing technical challenges. Furthermore, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system for managing imaging requests, satellite control, and data processing. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has delivered nearly 30,000 satellite images for various applications, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, and socio-economic development.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a crucial technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite initiatives. However, he emphasized the necessity for Vietnam to achieve greater technological independence. This calls for advancements in satellite design, payload integration, electronics, flight software, and ground systems to bolster Vietnam’s capabilities.
The cooperation between Vietnam and France entered a new phase during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During the visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. Together, they are investigating the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and potential technological avenues for VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations will likely focus on increasing Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and data applications. Areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and selected sensors and payloads offer Vietnam opportunities to enhance its domestic expertise. The ultimate aim is for Vietnam to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and innovate future satellite technologies.
