Istanbul’s Tech Advancements Surpass Heathrow as Europe’s Busiest Airport

Date:

In a notable shift within Europe’s aviation landscape, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest hub for passengers. During July, Istanbul Airport managed to accommodate 8.15 million passengers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. Compared to the same period last year, Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger numbers, whereas Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase. The decline at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

This development has added to the urgency for the UK government to make a decision regarding Heathrow’s proposed third runway. The airport currently operates at nearly full capacity with its two existing runways. The proposed expansion, which carries an estimated cost of £33 billion, aims to boost Heathrow’s capacity to handle approximately 150 million passengers annually. According to Heathrow, the latest passenger figures underscore the critical need for additional capacity to bolster the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.

Istanbul Airport’s rise in passenger numbers is bolstered by its relatively recent opening in 2018. The airport is strategically positioned on a larger site and operates 24 hours a day. It currently features three runways, with a fourth runway expected to be operational by the end of 2026, further enhancing its capacity and efficiency.

In the UK, other airports have also shown a robust increase in passenger traffic. London Stansted and Manchester airports both recorded their busiest July on record, with passenger numbers reaching 3.1 million and 3.4 million, respectively. This uptick in domestic travel underlines the growing demand for air travel within the UK, despite the challenges faced by its largest airport.
