EU Auto Sector Seeks UK Exemption to Boost Tech-Driven ‘Made in Europe’ Cars

Date:

The European automotive sector is appealing to the European Union for an exemption for the United Kingdom from the impending “Made in Europe” stipulations. Industry leaders caution that enforcing these requirements could significantly disrupt the automotive supply chain that closely links the UK and EU. The proposed Industrial Accelerator Act mandates that vehicles and components be manufactured within the EU to qualify for subsidies and public procurement contracts, aiming to bolster European industry and lessen dependency on low-cost Chinese imports.

Despite Brexit, industry stakeholders argue that the UK remains a vital part of the EU’s automotive network. They are advocating for UK-produced vehicles, batteries, and components to receive equal consideration as those made in EU countries. Current proposals, they claim, could inadvertently harm European companies operating factories in Britain, creating a ripple effect across the sector.

British automotive leaders have raised concerns that excluding UK-manufactured vehicles could drastically limit their access to the European market. This is significant, given that the UK and EU are each other’s largest trading partners for cars and automotive parts. The interconnectedness of the supply chain is underscored by the presence of major European manufacturers with production facilities in the UK, emphasizing the need for seamless integration.

Moreover, the industry has highlighted that restricting UK participation may undermine European competitiveness. Such a move could deter current investments and exacerbate the challenges faced by manufacturers, who are already contending with increasing competition from Chinese automakers. The potential fallout from these proposed measures has prompted urgent calls for a reconsideration of the policy to safeguard the integrated nature of the European and UK automotive industries.
