Western Europe is grappling with an unusually intense heatwave for this time of year, with countries like France, Spain, and the United Kingdom experiencing record-breaking temperatures in May. In France, over 350 towns have documented their highest May temperatures, particularly in the western parts, with the peak hitting 37.1°C in the Landes region in the southwest.
The United Kingdom has also seen unprecedented heat for the month, with Kew Gardens in London registering a record 34.8°C. Meteorologists have noted that temperatures across several European regions are soaring 12°C to 13°C above the seasonal norms. The heatwave is expected to persist for a few more days, with forecasts indicating that some regions in Spain might face temperatures as high as 40°C later this week.
French meteorological officials have attributed the extreme weather conditions to a “heat dome” effect, wherein hot air from Morocco is trapped under a potent high-pressure system. They have issued warnings that such phenomena are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. This heatwave prompted France to activate its national heat warning system in May for the first time since its implementation in 2004, placing 31 departments under high-temperature alerts, with several under the second-highest warning level.
In France, temperatures have exceeded 35°C in numerous towns, with Paris nearing 33°C. The extreme heat has already led to tragic consequences, with reports of a death during a 10-kilometer race near Paris due to a heart attack, while several other participants were hospitalized in critical condition. Meanwhile, in Spain, temperatures have already reached 38°C in the southern regions and are anticipated to rise further. Meteorologists have cautioned that many areas might experience “tropical nights,” where temperatures remain above 20°C even after sunset.
Experts are highlighting that the occurrence of heatwaves in Europe is becoming more common and starting earlier in the year, attributing these changes to the long-term impacts of climate change. As Europe continues to grapple with these rising temperatures, the need for strategies to cope with and mitigate the effects of climate change becomes increasingly urgent.
